  • Challenge to Myself

I am officially challenging myself to write 50 poems and 5 short stories. Once I complete my 50 poems and 5 short stories, I will buy myself xanga life =)

    It is heavy being gold.
Some prefer silver or diamonds or deep colored jewels,
but this is not yellow, not metal, not a currency for kings.
This is gold, pure and gold
that pools in our stomach to reflect the laughter from within,
gold that glistens through our pupils as stars to someone's galaxy,
gold that can feel the ceiling of the sky,
gold that takes no shape, cannot break, and melts but never boils.

But sometimes gold forgets its purity,
as we allow ourselves to be gilded
and allow that which has no shape to be outlined, to be painted,
frosted, garnished, and dressed to perfection,
because sometimes we forget it is heavy being gold.

I want to write more. I always do, but I feel like I need to be inspired first. Do I look for inspiration? Is this an active search in my surroundings, or is this an ongoing unearthing of something internal?

  • Good luck with reaching that goal. Even I would say that's a daunting task. It's a good thing to work for, though. You'll produce a multitude of work and hone your craft while you do it.

This is a good piece as well. Personally, I say let the piece write itself. Just because you feel the need to add to it doesn't mean it needs anything more. Let it sit a week before going back to it and then decide how you feel.

  • External stimuli can draw upon your internal resources.  If you find yourself unable to write one day, then perhaps doing a writing exercise like many of the prompts and challenges found here on Xanga can give you a boost.

The gold poem above made me think of Midas and of alchemy and of auras.

  • My creative writing professor criticized this "I need to feel like writing." She said that writing like all skills take practice. Writing when you feel like it is analogous to play, and practice will always hone your skills better than play.

There is always something to write about. It may not be what you are feeling at the moment, but like acting, you need to create the moment. My professor also recommended writing the moment you woke up because your mind is still somewhat functioning based on impulses and she wanted us to bridge the gap between our subconscious and conscious mind.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you accomplish this challenge, and I will be anticipating a significant growth in your poetic talent. I like your poem. To me, I saw gold as innocence, and when we grow older, we often forget our innocence as we are torn by the reality of adulthood.

  • Good luck with this! I look forward to seeing it and the little "LIFE" badge next to your name. =]

  • Good luck...   Poetry is sometimes very beautiful to read. I wish more young people like yourself would appreciate it and pursue writing...  I see you are on your way...

Try reading some modern poetry... Poetry publishes their current issues for free...
